Our WGC road trip to visit the Journey Camp participants at Washington College in late June evolved into more than just a "meet and greet" event. During the afternoon car ride, the small group of WGC donors caught up and bonded over sharing stories and laughs together, and had some time to explore a few fun shops in Chestertown before heading to campus.
Once on campus, we had the pleasure of meeting Marcy and Robin, the program leaders for the Journey Camp, who shared what the girls had learned during the week. We were welcomed by the 32 young ladies, all rising 8th or 9th graders, and they delighted the WGC audience with a presentation that described several local women of achievement.
Later in August, these women will be honored by the girls and awarded the thoughtful, hand crafted awards they created.
After our presentation feedback, each WGC member walked with their small group of girls to the dining hall for dinner. The girls were helpful guiding us through the 'line', recommending food selections, and getting our drinks, or returning our empty trays (without asking). Lively and interactive conversations took place within each group and the girls shared their inspiring weekly adventures. They in turn asked questions about the WGC and our involvement with the community. The maturity, etiquette, direction, and friendliness these young ladies showed, was most welcoming and refreshing to the WGC donors.
It was evident after our short time together, that the girls were not only taking home new friendship connections, but also a positive and rewarding experience. The mutual goal that WGC and MLW strive for by empowering young women, was met, and exceeded as illustrated by these Journey participants.
It was a special time spent with WGC and Journey Camp and our hope that all women can have similar opportunities in their futures.
