The Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County (WGC) sponsored a
two-part personal money management workshop for a woman’s group at the
North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center in December of 2008.
The workshop, “Get Control of Your Money,” was led by Betty Shepherd, a Columbia resident and long time financial literacy volunteer.
A Woman’s Journey Group was started a year ago with a grant from
WGC. The mission of the group is to strengthen local women to
become leaders in their home and communities. The group’s
coordinators are Reservoir High School English Language Learners
ParaEducator Gisela Cooke, Multiservice Center Outreach Coordinator
Vidia Dhanraj and journalist Lisa Kawata of Patuxent Publishing
Company.
Women in the group are provided practical resources, information, and
the opportunity to meet other women in the community and are helped in
overcoming barriers to services that support self-sufficiency and/or
from achievement of their personal life goals.
WGC is an organization of women philanthropists dedicated to addressing
the needs of women and girls in Howard County. Among its initiatives is
financial aid for women taking job-related courses at Howard Community
College, emergency funding for non-profits serving women and girls, a
summer leadership camp, Money Matters Club and STEM Career Expo for
middle and high school girls, and a variety of other programs to advance
its mission throughout the year.
