WGC's 2024-2025 "Break the Cycle" Period Product Drive
Since 2022, the WGC has supported women’s health and highlighted period poverty in Howard County through the WGC’s “Break the Cycle” Period Product Drive, an effort to highlight period poverty through education, donations, fundraising, and grantmaking to support women and girls in Howard County.
The WGC has chosen to continue our focus on this important issue because it's a need that is easily and often overlooked and we believe it is time to break the cycle of period poverty”
This effort is important to the WGC because:

The WGC has chosen to continue our focus on this important issue because it's a need that is easily and often overlooked and we believe it is time to break the cycle of period poverty”
This effort is important to the WGC because:
- We need to “Break the Cycle” of less than 2% of philanthropic giving going to women and girls.
- We need to “Break the Cycle” of being silent about how the continuum of women’s health and the unique challenges we face as women and girls impact our lives, and
- We need to “Break the Cycle” of period poverty for women and girls.
WGC’s “Break the Cycle” has Three Components:
- Education: WGC leaders and student interns are spreading the word about period poverty through learning, marketing, and events.
- Donations: WGC leaders and student interns are working with partners across the community to collect and deliver period products.
- Fundraising/Grantmaking: WGC leaders and student interns are raising money and providing funds to nonprofit partners working to alleviate period poverty.

WGC’s “Break the Cycle” Student Intern Program Goals:
We are excited to host 7 “Break the Cycle” Student Interns throughout the 2024-2025 school year.
- The focus of WGC’s “Break the Cycle” Student Intern Program is on women’s philanthropy, the continuum of women’s health, and in particular period poverty.
- The goals are to engage student interns through a nine month program of exploration with learning and activities that will highlight the power of women’s collective giving, the continuum of women’s health, how philanthropy is making a difference, and highlighting period poverty.
- The activities are focusing on student intern’s monthly educational opportunities, support for the product push, fundraising efforts, and grantmaking through the “Break the Cycle Mini Give!”
WGC’s “Break the Cycle” Student Intern Program Goals:
- Education: Increase student intern awareness and understanding of women's collective giving, the work of the WGC, the continuum of women’s health, period poverty, and how philanthropy is addressing these issues.
- Empowerment: Empower student interns to take leadership roles in advocating for women’s health and period poverty through the power of women’s collective giving.
- Engagement: Engage student interns in education, donations, fundraising, and grantmaking through the Product Drive and the “Break the Cycle Mini Give” effort to collectively give $5,000. Our student interns will be presented with information about three WGC nonprofit partners working in women’s health and will be given the opportunity to evaluate them around a list of criteria and award one with a Mini Give grant of $5,000 in May 2025.

WGC's September-October 2024 "Break the Cycle" $5,000 Fundraiser - Can You Help?
Two years ago the Women's Philanthropy Institute launched “Give to Women & Girls Day”, a groundbreaking effort to increase funding for women’s and girls’ organizations.
Why do we need a day for giving to women’s and girls’ organizations? While nearly 50,000 organizations across the country, less than 2% of all charitable giving goes to these organizations. Women and girls deserve more. That’s why the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County is seeking to raise $5,000 in honor of October 11 - Give to Women and Girls Day - to support our “Break the Cycle” Period Product Drive. We are fundraising to specifically to purchase more WGC “Break the Cycle” period product donation boxes to spread throughout the county. Can you help? Please donate here if so. Every donation is valued and appreciated! |
