What?
As the WGC strives to support women and girls throughout our community, one of the most effective actions we can take is this: helping to remove barriers. So many achievements, so many successes become possible when the path forward is cleared.
One of the most powerful ways in which we’ve helped to remove barriers is by funding Continuing Education for Women. This scholarship program, offered in partnership with the Howard Community College Educational Foundation (HCCEF), is one of our longest standing initiatives, providing support to low- and moderate-income women seeking job-related courses as they prepare to enter (or reenter) the workforce.
And another is through the WGC Dream Fund, created in 2012 to allow women at HCC, and now specifically through the HCC Career Links program, the opportunity to attend lectures, special events, or purchase books for their personal library regarding women and women’s issues
What makes this partnership so meaningful? In the words of someone who has served in leadership positions on both the WGC Board of Advisors and the HCCEF Board of Directors, Alison Canning sums it up perfectly:
So What?
Imagine being a young entrepreneur just starting out, a stay-at-home mom seeking to hone her skills before jumping back into the job market, an older woman dreaming of starting a whole new career. The only thing standing in their way is finding a way to pay for the training and knowledge necessary to make their goals into reality. And thanks to the WGC and the over $100,000 provided to fund the Continuing Education for Women scholarship through the years, each of these women have an opportunity to learn what they need to know - what they need to succeed - at an acclaimed, accredited institution of higher education.
And what does the WGC Dream Fund mean to those it supports?
The WGC Dream Fund is just that: a way to bring joy to HCC women who otherwise might not be able to afford to attend special events, lectures, or to own hardback copies of meaningful books such as Hidden Figures and Call Us What We Carry.
One other benefit of the WGC’s long-term commitment to this partnership with HCC is the opportunity to name two rooms on the campus: one in the Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) building, and one in the new Athletics and Math building.
Now What?
The need for greater access to higher education persists, and your support for Continuing Education for Women and the WGC Dream Fund will help even more women in our community gain the knowledge, tools, and opportunities they need to grow, thrive, and succeed.
For 20 years, the WGC has dedicated itself to leveraging our collective dollars, to amplifying the power of collective giving, to building a community of philanthropists and creating a permanent legacy to address the needs of women and girls in Howard County.

- “I was just overwhelmed when I received the book(s). I assumed it would be a small paperback copy. Hardback books are expensive! So when the receptionist handed me not only the hard copy of Becoming AND the guided journal, I almost cried. I got a huge lump in my throat. As a mother, I'm used to being the one who does the giving.” - HCC Career Links Student
