The State of Women and Girls in Howard County 2022

OVERVIEW

The Women's Giving Circle of Howard County is compiling a comprehensive report on the State of Women and Girls in Howard County as a centerpiece of our 20th Anniversary year in 2022. We will launch the report at our WGC March 8, 2022 Virtual Annual Celebration.

This report will develop a baseline under the framework used in the recent Maryland Women: A Status Report by the Maryland Women’s Commission and may include information from their upcoming survey. We plan to use the same, vetted, researched areas of concern, examining existing statistics through a gender and equity lens:

  • Demographics and Diversity
  • Work and the Economy
  • Education and Educators
  • Health and Well-Being
  • Safety and Justice
  • Leadership and Political Participation

We believe a fact and data-driven report is both timely and required to better inform and understand the challenges and needs of women and girls in our county, and to help identify strategic solutions. Our goal is to obtain baseline information to start which will help us determine how we might focus on specific areas moving forward.

  • The report, which will be presented in a website format, is being broken down by gender, social and racial disparities, population of women, women who lead single households, geography, etc. as we can, based on the guidance of our consultants, Sabina Taj and Shaista Keating.
  • The report aims to provide a look at a pre-COVID baseline and how women have been disproportionately affected this past year.
  • We know COVID will be an overlay and we will hope to determine what factors are influencing the data.
  • We aim to provide recommendations on where there are gaps and opportunities to better support women and girls in our county.
  • We are are compiling information about our grantmaking the last 20 years and how it falls within the categories we are using as a framework for the report.
  • And, we are looking at our past and upcoming grantmaking and how it falls within the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • We will utilize the data in the report to enhance our overall grantmaking in the future.
  • We are planning for a Year-two report that will update on the initial baseline data and will identify areas where we have recovered and/or areas of decline.
  • We will plan to update the report every two years thereafter.
  • We will take a leadership role in informing the community about the challenges and needs of women and girls in Howard County and in advocating on their behalf.
