WGC's Big Give 2023 Kick-Off!

5/17/2023

Wow, what a night to kick off the WGC's Big Give 2023 at The 3rd!

The Big Give 2023 is designed for women who want to learn more about grantmaking to women and girls in our community in a fast-paced, hands-on giving experience.

The Big Give 2023 has 35 women who have pooled $20,000 individually and as teams who will collectively grant this $20,000 to three nonprofits that support women and girls of Howard County. Big Give members will meet again in several weeks to hear from this year's 3 finalists and determine grant awards - stay tuned!

The Big Give 2022 was our inaugural year, where Big Give members gave $20,000 to Grassroots, HopeWorks, and the Howard Community College Educational Foundation.

You can learn more about the WGC's Big Give here.

WGC 2023 Feminine Hygiene Product Drive - May Update

5/15/2023

The WGC’s Feminine Hygiene Product Drive continues to bring in needed supplies for women and girls in Howard County. You can support this effort in two ways:

  • Donate Products: We are collecting donated products on a regular basis and bringing them to the Community Action Council/Howard County Food Bank, Columbia Community Care, and other places to distribute to women and girls in our community.

  • Donate Money: We invite donations to the WGC that we will provide to our nonprofit partners so they can purchase products for their clients.

The WGC has chosen to continue our focus on this because it's a need that is easily and often overlooked.

Did you know ...

  • 29% of girls miss school due to lack of supplies needed.
  • 39% cannot provide period products for themselves.
  • Some are forced to use towels and plastic instead of proper supplies.

You can read more about this important issue here.

Many thanks to our partners at the Howard County Library System, that has bins in all branches, as well as our partners at Howard Community College, Bra-La-La, Vectorworks, and The 3rd who are collecting products regularly. We will soon partner with Columbia Association, that will have bins in their fitness centers!

Thank you to everyone who donated money and/or products at locations around Howard County in 2022 and 2023. So far, we've been able to donate hundreds of pounds of products and over $4,000 dollars to WGC nonprofit partners to purchase products for their clients.
And, a big thanks to our WGC Student Interns Isabella Farro and Jess Ndiritu who are managing WGC's 2023 Feminine Hygiene Product Drive!

3 Questions With Philanthropist Minah Woo for WGC's "Our Giving, Our Stories" Series in Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

What moves you to give your time, talent, and financial resources?

"I am moved to give because I have been given much. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 10 years old with just 8 bags we were allowed to bring on the airplane. I have been a beneficiary of those who helped me along the way. I could never pay them back, but I can pay it forward. I do what I can to make the world a better place at least for those lives I am fortunate to touch."

What advice do you have for those interested in giving back?

First, find your "WHY" - What brings you joy? What are you passionate about? What brings you a sense of accomplishment no matter how tired you may physically be? That is the cause worth your time and treasures. Second, look around and observe. Giving back does not need to be something grand. A small gesture of help or small monetary giving can make a big difference. Even if you may not have solved the world's problems, you helped change that person's world." - Minah Woo

Minah currently supports Howard Community College, The 3rd, and United Way of Central Maryland.
