WGC ERN Request: $629+ to Support a Woman in Need

3/13/2024

The Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County invites you to join with us to raise at least $629 to support a woman in need through the WGC's Emergency Response Network (ERN).

Our partners at HopeWorks have a client who has a long history of sexual abuse who is currently part of their Residential Program and staying at one of their transitional homes.

This woman has a job and the promise of another and is in need of support to fix her car that is currently in the shop -  she can't get to her job without it. Once her car is fixed and she starts working again, she will look for permanent housing.

On behalf of our partners at HopeWorks, we are looking to raise at least $629 to help fix her car and support her.

Can you help?

Any amount is valued and appreciated!

Thank you,

Jennifer Bodensiek, WGC Chair
Candace Dodson-Reed, WGC Grants Committee Chair

At WGC's March 6, 2024 Annual Celebration & Pink Party, Tyeshia "Ty" Wilson joined us as our Special Guest Speaker virtually in a pre-taped message discussing how giving circles are supporting Women's Rights across the country.

Ty is a powerhouse community organizer, trainer, consultant and a sought-after national speaker on equity in philanthropy, politics, community engagement, and leadership.

She is the Senior Director of Community at Philanthropy Together and connects with giving circle leaders and members around the world.
Ty is involved in numerous volunteer organizations focused on advancing equity in philanthropy, including as the Chair-Elect of HERitage Giving Fund, the first Black giving circle in Texas that invests in Black, women-led nonprofits serving women and girls. And, she was recently an honoree on the annual, national Black Women Give Back List.

Happy Women's History Month & International Women's Day!

We had a fabulous night on March 6 at WGC's 2024 Annual Celebration & Pink Party!

It was wonderful to have so many of us together exactly 48 hours ago at Howard Community College to discuss how philanthropy can, and is, supporting women's rights. View photos from the event here

WGC Chair Jennifer Bodensiek declared that the state of the WGC is strong, highlighted the role that WGC is playing nationally in growing the women's collective giving movement, and underscored our impact the last 22 years:

  • $1.2 million in grants
  • $1.1 million endowment
  • 1,700+ donors

This, is the power of our giving circle.

Jennifer also reviewed the WGC's State of Women and Girls in Howard County, and how we continue to utilize the data to inform our grantmaking and partner in the community.

She highlighted basic statistics that drive our work, including that:

  • Women make 82 cents for every dollar a man is paid.
  • Women's reproductive health is being challenged every day.
  • We lack affordable child care for women who work outside the home and women in school.
  • We lack federal paid family leave for new mothers, and
  • Half a million women and girls age 12 and over are the victims of sexual assault every year.

Despite all of this - less than 2% of all charitable giving goes to programs that support women and girls.

WGC Advisory Board Member Alison Canning provided an overview of our recent efforts to address this, and highlighted our long-standing partnership with Howard Community College, which included discussing 5 ways we have provided funding support:

  • HCC Scholarships
  • HCC Career Links
  • HCC/CAC Partnership
  • HCC Workforce Development and Skilled Trades Center
  • HCC/WGC Feminine Hygiene Product Drive Partnership

You can learn more here

WGC Executive Director Buffy Beaudoin-Schwartz highlighted 5 recent trends in women's philanthropy from the Women's Philanthropy Institute, that included:

  • The Rise of Younger Women Donors
  • Women Donors and Recipients in Conflict Zones
  • Climate Change and the Environment
  • Feminist Philanthropy and Gender Equity
  • Politics, Democracy, and the Election Cycle

You can learn more here

And, she discussed how WGC is focusing on women's rights through collaboration with our donors, nonprofit, and community partners. She then introduced our Special Guest Speaker Tyeshia "Ty" Wilson of Philanthropy Together and the HERitage Giving Fund, who highlighted how giving circles across the country are supporting women's rights - you can listen to Ty's words of wisdom here.

WGC Advisory Board Member Lee Draminski introduced our powerhouse panel and Advisory Board Member Laura Bacon did a wonderful job facilitating an inspirational and important conversation about how philanthropy can, and is supporting women's rights - with WGC Advisory Board Chair Jennifer Bodensiek, former Maryland Women's Commissioner Melissa Curtin, Howard County Women's Commissioner Kashonna Marrow, and Director of the Howard County Office of Human Rights and Equity Yolanda Sonnier.

They provided insightful and inspirational commentary based on their personal, professional, and lived experiences, answering 3 key questions:

  • What are you seeing regarding the challenges for women’s rights?
  • What can we do today to support women’s rights?
  • What makes you hopeful from a women’s right’s perspective?

And, we pledged to continue the conversation - stay tuned for additional opportunities.

We honored past WGC Chair Alison Canning for Women's History Month, and we enjoyed delicious food from Chef Jamila, non-alcoholic drinks from Beth Harbinson and Sobar, and women-made wine from The Wine Bin.

WGC Advisory Board Member Kashonna Marrow ended the celebration with information on how to give and get involved in the WGC. After the Annual Celebration, many of you asked how you can get or remain involved in our collective work.

Here are 10 ways to engage in the coming months:

  • Sponsor the WGC in 2024
  • Support the WGC's 2024 Feminine Hygiene Product Drive
  • Participate in the WGC's 2024 Our Giving, Our Stories
  • Join the WGC's Big Give 2024 by April 15
  • Join with WGC to Visit the 2024 Visionary Women Exhibit - March 8 Through April 5
  • Attend the WGC's 2024 Mother's Day Happy Hour on May 1
  • Join the WGC at the 2024 Howard County Changemaker Challenge on May 7
  • Join the WGC at the Listen to Your Mother Live Event on May 11
  • Participate in the Big Give 2024 on May 13 and May 20
  • Join the WGC at the Community Foundation's 2024 Spring Party on May 16
  • Attend the WGC's 2024 Black Philanthropy Month Happy Hour on August 1

Many thanks to all of our sponsors so far this year, those who attended the event, and to everyone who supports the WGC and all that you do to support women's rights in Howard County.

While it is Women’s History Month, and International Women’s Day, there is not just one time to celebrate women’s successes and discuss solutions to ongoing challenges.

We must continue to do this each and every day, and the Women’s Giving Circle will be here to be your partner in supporting women and girls, and women's rights in Howard County.

We are truly stronger together!

5 Trends in Women's Philanthropy

Remarks by WGC Executive Director Buffy Beaudoin-Schwartz at the WGC's March 6, 2024 Annual Celebration & Pink Party

As we get ready to hear from our incredible panel on the topic of how philanthropy can and is supporting women’s rights, I want to help frame the conversation by highlighting 5 key trends we are seeing right now in women’s philanthropy.

Several weeks ago, our friends and partners at the Womens’ Philanthropy Institute (WPI) of Indiana University hosted a webinar to look into a crystal ball and discuss what members of the giving community believe is coming our way in the coming year.

Here are the five key trends they identified:

  1. The Rise of Younger Women Donors. We are in the midst of one of the greatest transfers of wealth in history. Baby Boomers accumulated an unprecedented amount of wealth in their lives, and now that they are aging that wealth will be passed on. The daughters and granddaughters of the Boomers stand to inherit the “majority of this wealth”. And when women have more, they give more. Also millions of Gen Z women are moving into positions of leadership in philanthropy.
  2. Women Donors and Recipients in Conflict Zones. As is usually the situation, women and girls are disproportionately affected by war and armed conflict. These conflicts come at a time when women are often “leading the charge” in donating and lobbying on these issues across the board.
  3. Climate Change and the Environment. The results of climate degradation are already becoming all-too familiar. Once again, women and girls are disproportionately affected by these changes.
  4. Feminist Philanthropy and Gender Equity. The need for greater empowerment of women in the decision-making process is ongoing. Women are seeking a more emphatic voice in the creation of Sustainable Development Goals, especially now in the wake of recent rulings by the US Supreme Court.
  5. Politics, Democracy, and the Election Cycle. Of course 2024 is a presidential election year and many of the issues have major implications for women, reproductive rights perhaps being at the forefront.

The Women’s Giving Circle will continue to obtain important research, use data, build partnerships, and strengthen relationships to fund women and girls, and to support women’s rights.

We thank our partners at the Women's Philanthropy Institute for their important research that informs our work.

Spotlight: WGC's Funding Partnership with HCC

Picture
Remarks by WGC Advisory Board Member Alison Canning at WGC's March 6, 2024 Annual Celebration & Pink Party:

I am so proud of the long-standing and growing partnership between the WGC and Howard Community College.

We all know that educating women and girls can create a ripple effect of greater good that holds the key to unlocking brighter futures and empowers women to reach their full potential. Education gives women a pathway to learn the power of choice: how to advocate for themselves and think about how they want to live their lives, what they want to do, and who their role models are. Providing women with access to education, training, and resources enables them to challenge traditional gender roles and break down barriers

Our State of Women and Girls in Howard County underscores what we know - that poverty rates are higher for Howard County women if their educational attainment is a high school graduate or less. Once women attain bachelor's degrees or higher educational degrees, the poverty rate for Howard County women becomes lower.

5 Ways We’ve Partnered

I want to share 5 ways that the WGC has partnered with HCC and has served as  “a lifeline” to women at HCC through the years:

  • Scholarships: Our partnership with HCC began when the WGC first started over 22 years ago with the WGC providing scholarships for women returning to the workforce. Those scholarships continue today through an ongoing multi-year grant and we’ve supported over 50 women through the years to attend HCC to further their education, including providing a stipend for books and other resources.

  • Career Links: WGC donors, through our Big GIve 2022, provided HCC with a grant to Career Links, which helps students during a time of crisis and provides them with emergency funding so they can stay in school.

  • CAC Partnership: In 2022, WGC partnered with HCC to support their new partnership with the Community Action Council with the goal to support the education of 25-30 CAC clients whose children attend their head start program and are moving forward with their education by enrolling at HCC and participating in the Career Links (CL) program.

  • Workforce Development and Skilled Trades Center: In 2023 WGC pledged multi-year support for the new Workforce Development and Skilled Trades Center that will support women in these industries that are traditionally male-dominated.

  • Feminine Hygiene Product Drive: And finally, last year at our Annual Celebration we launched our partnership with HCC as part of our Feminine Hygiene Product Drive that supports students through the HCC Food Pantry. The WGC has chosen to continue our focus on this because it's a need that is easily and often overlooked.

Our data tells us that:

  • 29% of girls miss school due to lack of supplies needed
  • 39% cannot provide period products for themselves, and
  • Some are forced to use towels and plastic instead of proper supplies.

We know that there is a link between period poverty and gender education gaps … and we have partnered with HCC to provide an opportunity for students to donate products if they can, and to take products if they need to. Here’s a snapshot of what’s happened this past year:

  • You all helped us give HCC 25 pounds of feminine hygiene products at last year’s Annual Celebration.
  • There were approximately 2,360 pantry visits by women and HCC provided feminine hygiene items to at least half of those visitors (1,180 women).
  • HCC’s goal is to provide a box of products to each woman who needs it, and our  feminine hygiene drive partnership should allow HCC to come close to that goal in the next year.

Thank you all for donating products today in our new boxes that will support students at HCC. In fact, rather than purchasing marketing “swag” for this event, we have chosen to invest that money in these new, sturdier, more visible boxes for our 2024 Feminine Hygiene Product Drive. They are making their debut today and you will start to see them around town at all library branches, at CA gyms, and at local businesses like The 3rd, Vectorworks and Bra-la-la. And, we’ve raised over $6,000 to provide to our partners to purchase products for their clients, and we invite you all to continue participating by donating products and donating money as we continue to grow this important effort.

We appreciate our long-standing partnership with Howard Community College!

The Women's Giving Circle is proud to amplify the voices and stories of women givers in our community through our regular series "Our Giving, Our Stories".

This month we are profiling
Alison Canning in honor of Women's History Month.

What moves you to give your time, talent, and financial resources?

"From a very young age, my parents and grandparents instilled in me a strong understanding of the importance of giving to others, the power of community, and gratitude for the opportunities that I have been given. Having grown up in Howard County, I have a passion for helping the local community by expanding opportunities for others who need it most. It is truly a joy to give of my time, talent and resources to help others because it is innate to who I am as a person."

Alison currently serves as the Chair of the Board for the Howard Community College Educational Foundation, and is a long-standing member of the Advisory Board for the Women's Giving Circle of Howard County.
