WGC Emergency Response Network Request - $1,000 - Thank You!

7/11/2023

The Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County invited donors to help us raise at least $1,000 to support a woman in need at HopeWorks through our Emergency Response Network (ERN) - and we collectively raised $2,400 - thank you!

This, is the power of a giving circle.

Here's the ERN request:

HopeWorks has a client in their residential program who they have helped secure a new permanent residence that she can move into with her two children. The last step for their client is to secure movers to assist with the transition and move belongings from her former residence and storage unit into her new home. The client is in need of financial assistance to obtain a moving company, at a cost of $1,065.

HopeWorks is requesting $1,000 to help this woman and her kids.

On behalf of our partners at HopeWorks we invite you to join with us in raising at least $1,000 to support this woman in our community. We will leave this ERN request open for several days and 100% of all gifts will go directly to HopeWorks to support their client in need.

Can you help?

Any amount is valued and appreciated!

Thank you,

Jennifer Bodensiek, WGC Chair
Candace Dodson-Reed and Alison Canning, WGC Grants Committee Co-Chairs
Buffy Beaudoin-Schwartz, WGC Executive Director

3 Questions With Philanthropist Beth Sandbower Harbinson for WGC's "Our Giving, Our Stories" Series During Independence Day/Spirit of Independence

7/5/2023

Beth Sandbower Harbinson is the founder of Sobar® and has worked in nonprofit management, fundraising, and development for 30 years. Beth is committed to local efforts focused on reducing the stigma associated with alcoholism, addiction and mental illness and providing greater access to treatment resources. She currently serves on the Local Behavioral Health Advisory Board and the Opiate Crisis Community Council.

Sobar’s mission is to provide and promote innovative beverage options to those who cannot or choose not to drink alcohol.

"Being part of the founding group of the Women's Giving Circle helped me to focus on the specific needs of women and girls in the county.  With both The Harbinson Group - a consulting firm I ran for 5 years - and Sobar, I have had the opportunity to mentor and employ women and girls, many of whom are reentering the workforce after taking time off - for parenting and for recovery. Many people think that time away from work  for any reason somehow gives them a disadvantage when they are ready or want to return to work and this is usually not the case.  Skills honed as a parent or progress made in recovery can provide valuable insight and personal growth that is an asset to an employer. I have had the privilege of watching many women blossom as they find meaningful work."

Beth currently broadly supports the addiction recovery community. As she said "this is a second class disease in terms of care and it still takes a village to help someone get on the long term path to recovery." She also support the principles embraced by Conscious Capitalism - living mindfully when it comes to being a consumer, and she supports local food banks - Sobar frequently donates unused produce and soon to be expired products.
